Many people assume that this movement is simply unavoidable. Although no lower denture can behave exactly like natural teeth or an implant-supported denture, a specialized lower suction technique may provide significantly better stability and retention for suitable patients.

The important words are suitable patients. Lower suction is not possible for everyone, and it should never be promised without carefully examining the mouth first.

Why Do Upper Dentures Usually Stay in Place More Easily?

Creating suction with an upper complete denture is generally more achievable. The upper jaw includes the palate, which gives the denture a broad surface to rest against. If the borders and back edge of the denture create an effective seal, the denture can resist lifting away from the gums.

The lower jaw is completely different.

There is no broad palate supporting a lower denture. Instead, the denture sits on a much smaller horseshoe-shaped ridge surrounded by moving structures. Your tongue, cheeks, lips, and floor of the mouth are constantly moving as you speak, chew, swallow, and make facial expressions.

If the lower denture is too long, these muscles may push it out of place. If it is too short, it may not develop the border seal needed for suction. If the teeth or polished surfaces are positioned incorrectly, the tongue and cheeks can destabilize the denture during everyday function.

This is why making an upper denture with suction is relatively common, while creating meaningful suction with a lower denture requires much greater precision, training, and control of the impression.

What Is a Lower Suction Denture?

A lower suction denture is designed to create a seal around its borders while working in harmony with the muscles surrounding it. When the anatomy and conditions are favourable, this seal helps the denture resist lifting and shifting.

For the patient, the potential benefit is straightforward: a lower denture that feels more stable during daily life.

The Size and Shape of the Lower Ridge

A larger, more prominent lower ridge generally gives the denture more surface area and support than a severely resorbed or very flat ridge. A small ridge does not automatically rule treatment out, but it can make stability and suction more difficult to achieve.

The Retromolar Pads

The retromolar pads are areas of soft tissue located behind the lower ridge on each side. Their shape and relationship with the surrounding tissues are important when forming the back portion of the denture seal.

Favourable, prominent retromolar pads may improve the opportunity to create an effective seal. We examine both sides carefully rather than assuming every lower jaw can be treated in the same way.

The Tissue Beneath the Tongue

The sublingual tissues and floor of the mouth play a major role in the inside border of a lower denture. These tissues move as the tongue moves, so the denture must extend far enough to use the available space without interfering with normal function.

Capturing this area accurately is one of the most technically demanding parts of the lower suction impression.

Saliva and Dry Mouth

Adequate saliva helps create and maintain the thin seal between the denture and oral tissues. Dry mouth can reduce retention and make denture wearing less comfortable.

Dry mouth does not necessarily mean that no improvement is possible, but it is an important factor that may limit how much suction can be achieved. During your assessment, we will discuss symptoms of dry mouth, medications, and other factors that may affect saliva.

A basic impression may record the shape of the gums while the mouth is relatively still. However, your mouth does not remain still in daily life. Your tongue, lips, cheeks, and floor of the mouth continually change position.

For a lower suction denture, we use specialized impression techniques and materials to record both the gums and the functional movement of the tissues around them. This process is called functional border moulding.

The objective is to determine exactly where the denture borders can extend to create a seal without being displaced by your muscles.

The Five Functional Movements

During the specialized impression, we guide you through five deliberate movements:

  1. Move your tongue to the left.

  2. Move your tongue to the right.

  3. Purse your lips as though you are kissing.

  4. Push your tongue forward.

  5. Swallow.

You may also be asked to bite down gently on the impression tray. This helps record the tissues while your jaw is closing and allows the impression to develop under controlled function.

These actions are not random. Each movement activates different muscles around the denture. The impression material records how those tissues behave, helping us shape the denture so the tongue, cheeks, lips, and floor of the mouth are less likely to lift it during normal use.

Patient participation matters. Following the movements accurately gives us better information from which to design the denture.

His approach focuses on assessing whether a patient has suitable anatomy and creating a continuous seal around the lower denture through precise impression procedures and thoughtful denture design.
